In competitive surfing, your final score is the sum of your two best wave scores (each 0-10) plus maneuver and variety bonuses. Judges score waves on commitment, variety, power, flow, and innovation. A score above 8.0 is excellent. World Tour heats are won with totals of 14-17 out of 20. Wave selection is critical - judges reward quality over quantity.
